The BMW M5 CS was the first—and so far, only—‘Competition Sport’ version of the M5 sedan. With less weight and more power than the F90 M5 it’s based on, this is one truly special M5. They’re also rare, with just 400 or so M5 CS units allocated for the United States. This week, one lucky buyer will drive off in an M5 CS, as a gorgeous 2022 example with just 8,900 miles has popped up for auction in Florida. The current bid reflects the almost zero depreciation of this guaranteed future classic.
The Last Great M5?

The M5 CS managed to address complaints that the standard F90 M5 was too heavy and too disconnected in its driving demeanor. It achieved that by shedding around 230 pounds and getting a 627-horsepower version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. BMW also removed some sound-deadening materials and improved the feel and feedback of the steering, making it the most thrilling M5 to drive in several years. Several independent tests timed 0-60 runs of under three seconds, making it quicker than the newer G90 M5; the G90’s issue is its incredible mass of 5,390 lbs (due to the plug-in hybrid powertrain), over 1,200 lbs more than the older CS.

Besides its more involving driving experience, the M5 CS looks leaner and neater than the bulging new G90. Inside, the CS benefits from previous-generation BMW build quality, and it still has more user-friendly controls working in unison with the touchscreen.
The new, plug-in hybrid M5 may be a technical marvel, but it lacks the magic of the M5 CS. This particular CS for sale is finished in Brands Hatch Gray Metallic over a black interior. It’s covered roughly 8,900 miles, has a clean vehicle history with no accidents, and has already had four oil changes over the course of its short life.
How Much Should You Pay?

Cars&Bids
This 2022 BMW M5 CS cost $143,995 when new, including a gas guzzler tax of $1,000 and a destination charge of $995. Kelley Blue Book suggests the fair purchase price of an M5 CS is $131,900, indicating very little depreciation for the hot sedan. At $136,000, the current high bid on Cars & Bids matches the KBB fair purchase price closely.

Very few M5 CS models have been sold in recent years due to the sedan’s rarity. In 2024, a 5,900-mile example went for $130,500, while another 2022 model sold for a staggering $172,233 soon after launching. On Bring A Trailer, the most expensive M5 CS sold so far is a 2022 model, which went for $196,000 last year—that one had a mere 118 miles, though.
All things considered, the current high bid of $136,000 accurately reflects the car’s provenance and rarity. It’s very likely the last non-hybrid M5 ever and it still outperforms the all-new G90. With the auction set to end on February 17, we may very well see this M5 CS creep closer to the $150k mark.
